Will I need an antenna if I get a new small flat screen TV that won’t be connected to cable after switchover?

We have cable, but none in our kitchen where I keep a small TV. I don't want to deal with the converter box, so I'm hoping to buy a small updated flat screen (that, from what I understand, won't require the converter box). Since it won't be connected to cable, will I need an antenna if it's an updated TV?
