What type of television is best for my needs? Should I purchase a LCD or Plasma Flat Screen TV?

I'm looking to spend around $1000. The size is dependent on the price. I thinking a 42 inch or the next size up. I'm not a gamer, just watch alot of action and sports. What kind is the best value for the money? I plan on consulting Consumer Reports, but any opinions on the matter would be greatly appreciatted.
