Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P46S1 Excellent Value
I really rate this 4. 5 stars, but for less than $ 1k, this is worth 5 stars. I have a Sony rear projection TV KDS55A2000. I think the colors are a bit better in the Sony, but the blacks, shadow detail, contrast is better on the Panasonic. The Panasonic is also less than half what it cost of Sony three years ago. And much easier to move, because it is a flat screen and not too heavy (or consumers of energy) than previous plasmas. Very occasionally, I note the tendency of a little green, but not enough not to bother me. I think this can be corrected with calibration. The audio is sufficient for a television (comparable to Sony). If you want high quality sound, then you must use a receiver and external speakers. Advertising is powerful and I wish there was an adjustment to compensate for that. S1 Series does notmany options for picture adjustments in the user menu – not as numerous as those from Sony – but it is enough for most users. In general, the picture quality is excellent. Even decent. Upconverted SD DVD is very good. Television is a great value. I reviewed the X1 720p, but you can see a difference in the brightness and PQ in the store. I Tinkera with settings so that I and my wife and I have agreed that the S1 was much better and worth the dollars. Of course, it may not be at home. Plasmas do not look as good in the shops – in bright fluorescent light, next to the LCD screen too bright – but believe me, they are better at home than any LCD. The G-10 seems to offer real and so THX THX certification, and some online features. THX is too dark, without calibration. For a smooth 24fps playback (without blinking), you have to switch to the V10, which is considerably more expensive. All have the same group, and most people will be very pleased with the S1. Of course, the V10 is better but if money is a concern, go with the S1. You will not find a better price for the TV. The menu can be slow – making adjustments or manual adjustment of channels – but it’s quibbling. You can find forums online advice on the best settings – including advice on setting up the service menu, if you are adventurous.
