connecting vaio labtop to lg flat screen tv?

ok here is what is going i have a vaio labtop and a lg flat screen tv. i wanted to view movies on my lg tv so i bought a vga male to male 15 pin cord. i plug both ends of the cord to my labtop and my tv. then when i turn on my tv and labtop, but my tv says that it has no signal. so i was asking if someone could give me a step by step instruction of what im supposed to do to get them connected. also if you can be specific. i will give max points to whoever helps me. thnx.
